Prior to the amalgamation of the two clubs, Mount Wellington had the more impressive record in terms of on the field achievements.
During the 1970s and 1980s it was arguably the strongest club in the country, rivalled only by Christchurch United.
The club has taken out the National Soccer League title 5 times, in 1972, 1974, 1980, 1982 and 1986. Auckland University also took part in the National Soccer League from 1983 to 1986 without winning the title.
Mount Wellington also won the Chatham Cup 5 times in 1973, 1980, 1982,1983 and 1990. It then won twice more after amalgamation, in 2001 and 2003 making it the only club to have won New Zealand's top knock-out competition a record 7 times by then.
Many of New Zealnd's greatest players and coaches have played for the clubs, most notably the recent national coach, Ricki Herbert and the first coach to take New Zealand to their first ever FIFA world cup finals tournament, John Adshead.
